THE CLIENT

The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia’s premier learning and research institutions. It is the oldest university in Queensland and has produced generations of graduates who have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry.

The University is a founding member of the national Group of Eight, an alliance of research-­‐strong “sandstone” universities committed to ensuring that Australia has higher education institutions which are genuinely world class.

THE CHALLENGE

The University of Queensland is a public university with many students across a broad range of campuses. The University of Queensland has 774 buildings covering 470,979 m2 and holding 1955 teaching rooms and laboratories. They also have over 18,000 computers on site.

Students and staff are increasingly utilising modern technologies to access teaching and learning resources. A key driver is their interest in being able t access wireless networks in outdoor as well as indoor spaces within the campuses.

THE SOLUTION

CBO was commissioned by Cisco to conduct an 802.11n wireless LAN site survey and network design at the University of Queensland’s campuses. The resultant bill of materials was for 3,500 wireless access points:

  • 3,400 Cisco 1142 access points
  • 100 Cisco 1252 external access points

CBO was contracted for the installation of the Outdoor Wireless MESH at UQ’s campuses located at St Lucia, Ipswich, Gatton and the School of Dentistry in Brisbane.

UQ will use the coverage for data, with plans to use laptops, iPhones and devices such as parking meters as network clients.





THE RESULTS

 

The work at UQ commenced in November 2009 and has resulted in positive feedback from students and faculty alike. UQ are very confident that they will be extremely happy with the end result.
